I’m stoked knowing folks are about to step into this world of hurt for the first time. An Xbox One version hasn’t been expressly confirmed, but it seems very likely considering the developers are looking into other platforms. At present, Spelunky 2 doesn’t have a page on the US or UK.

The game received critical acclaim upon release. The game hits Steam on September 29, two weeks after the initial PS4 launch, so be on the lookout for Xbox port information after then. Spelunky 2 will release on PS4 on September 15 at 08:00am PT and 11:00am ET (16:00pm BST), and Steam on September 29.

It is the sequel to Spelunky (2008) and was released for PlayStation 4 and Windows in September 2020, for Nintendo Switch in August 2021, and for Xbox One and Xbox Series X/S in January 2022. Enough game-changing updates have come out that some of my advice is outdated (namely, a certain boss fight whose whole flow was overhauled), but much of that guide, especially the less-spoilery starter tips and alternate routes, will still resonate. That said, since its initial PS4 and Steam launches last year, Spelunky 2 has become less prickly. Meet the next generation of explorers as they find themselves on the Moon, searching for treasure and missing family. Spelunky 2 is also fantastic as a sort of greatly expanded and remixed take on the same format, but initially, it can be divisive as a “sequel.” It pushes back on some of the tried-and-true habits of Spelunky 1-obsessed players, and that can feel weird at first, but further in it’ll click, and it reaches crazy heights with its branching structure.
I would say that if you’re coming in totally fresh to this whole roguelike platformer craze, the original Spelunky is, in my eyes, essentially perfect.
